I jump around a bit when painting figures. Sometimes you get stuck while trying to determine colors or schemes and "is that flashing or part of the figure?" So don't be surprised to see a miniature revisited from time to time.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06266972257873826787noreply@blogger.comBlogger149125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5426404161075682517.post-64449207067674258612017-02-12T14:33:00.001-05:002017-02-12T15:13:38.480-05:00Side Project :: WIP :: Mountain Base w/ Marble BoulderAs I tend to do, I had a side basing project today for our Paint Day here in the Finger Lakes of New York.<br />
<br />
So I present the ...<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: 36px;">Mountain Base w/ Marble Boulder.</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vA8vOZh-Y88/WKCynBSxZTI/AAAAAAAAgnY/yjEtwvkrAeEPCW32LvXt45exH_FXmCXJQCLcB/s1600/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BAssembled.jpg" imageanchor="1"><br /><img border="0" height="335" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vA8vOZh-Y88/WKCynBSxZTI/AAAAAAAAgnY/yjEtwvkrAeEPCW32LvXt45exH_FXmCXJQCLcB/s400/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BAssembled.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
The pieces are obviously, Bark (from <a href="https://goo.gl/5kAer7" target="_blank">Mosser Lee Garden Gag</a>), Marble stone (from Lowes, loose in the parking lot), Play Sand, and <a href="https://goo.gl/KMkess" target="_blank">Loctite Super Glue</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/5V5iaQ" target="_blank">Bob Smith Industries 103 Super Thin Glue</a>. All of that is mounted on a 3.75-inch Square Trivet from the dollar store. The bark and sand has <a href="https://goo.gl/o1ck50" target="_blank">Reaper Brush-on Sealer</a> on it to allow a good surface for painting.</div>
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4zyzarnfQd8/WKC0BhNIUKI/AAAAAAAAgng/f7UmwlE1yEk-Bnunmw51a0GZGCaZ_OuIQCLcB/s1600/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BPrimed%2Band%2BWashed%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="286" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4zyzarnfQd8/WKC0BhNIUKI/AAAAAAAAgng/f7UmwlE1yEk-Bnunmw51a0GZGCaZ_OuIQCLcB/s640/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BPrimed%2Band%2BWashed%2B1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once the sealer dry, I primed it with <a href="https://goo.gl/fojWUy" target="_blank">Reaper Grey Primer</a> and then washed it with Reaper Coal Black.* </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eXsgKjUy8JU/WKC0ef0sS-I/AAAAAAAAgns/R5tLZ4JfBjU-8uFZV8i2JblEEMeiq9XMACLcB/s1600/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BSnow%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="286" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eXsgKjUy8JU/WKC0ef0sS-I/AAAAAAAAgns/R5tLZ4JfBjU-8uFZV8i2JblEEMeiq9XMACLcB/s640/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BSnow%2B1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Twc0dUUaGBk/WKC0KkIVw7I/AAAAAAAAgno/lrhGjRNOK1A1DWJ_9C_4jFmJ-mbfMOZowCEw/s1600/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BSnow%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="286" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Twc0dUUaGBk/WKC0KkIVw7I/AAAAAAAAgno/lrhGjRNOK1A1DWJ_9C_4jFmJ-mbfMOZowCEw/s640/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BSnow%2B2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
From there, I coated the sand that I could see with the Reaper Sparkling Snow.*<br />
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j7LCrhpsGy4/WKC0q7gA19I/AAAAAAAAgnw/PgJG9HR5YWsQMRBz0QVql0sJIRs71qk7wCLcB/s1600/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BSnow%2Band%2BRock%2BStart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="536" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j7LCrhpsGy4/WKC0q7gA19I/AAAAAAAAgnw/PgJG9HR5YWsQMRBz0QVql0sJIRs71qk7wCLcB/s640/Mountain%2BBase%2B-%2BSnow%2Band%2BRock%2BStart.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Finally, I started working on my finished rock colors.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I went with <a href="https://goo.gl/FMtm21" target="_blank">Reaper Redstone Shadow</a>, Reaper Turkey Brown,* and <a href="https://goo.gl/0sYxcw" target="_blank">Reaper Tanned Shadow</a> as a highlight color.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #fff2cc;"><span style="font-size: 12px;">* Reaper Coal Black, Reaper Sparkling Snow, and Turkey Brown are part of Reaper's special Holiday Set which was available for a limited time on their website.</span></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Amusingly, this brought it back towards the original bark colors.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you hadn't guessed it, I am leaving the marble piece alone for the
moment. I do expect to coat it with <a href="https://goo.gl/u8DeaC" target="_blank">Testors DullCote</a> later which should dull
the sheen making the boulder fit in with the scale a bit more.<br />
<br />
Of course, it'll be fun to find the perfect mini to go with this big piece.<br />
<br />
Here's an option...<br />
<br />

<br />
This <a href="https://goo.gl/WY17aL" target="_blank">Reaper Miniatures Mountain Troll</a>, sculpted by Ben Siens, is inspired by the
Abomination from Marvel Comics as seen in the early years of the
Incredible Hulk. The Abomination has an interesting overall look to his
skin. It's scaly and leathery, and naturally, green for a gamma
irradiated monster. The back muscles of the miniature immediately
reminded me of the Abomination so I ran with it. You can see for
yourself how the artists drew and colored him...<br />

<br />
As per usual, my buddy <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ub3rs.ubsession" target="_blank">@Ub3r's Ubsession</a> complained that there weren't enough SKULLZ
on the last miniature I posted so this one's all about the SKULLZ!
Using some loose skulls from <a href="https://goo.gl/WmnIIR" target="_blank">Toad King Castings</a> as well as a trio on a
flat piece, I built a skull pile of freshly peeled human sized skulls. I
placed one in the corner for the one that rolled away a bit. And in
his hand, the Skull Collector has an ogre skull to add to his growing
pile.<br />
<br />
I used paints from Reaper Miniatures, mainly the <a href="https://goo.gl/3SOQNE" target="_blank">Moss Triad</a> as his
skin tones, my recently acquired <a href="https://goo.gl/9H36bN" target="_blank">Army Painter Warpaints</a>, some Scale 75
metallic paints for the armor and axe and a few Vallejo paints. The
troll is mounted on a piece of slate with his integral base merged with
sand and ballast to bring the terrain level. The bush and vines are
both created from moss. To see most everything done to him, <a class="bbc_url" href="https://goo.gl/uSjT5n" target="_blank" title="">check out his WIP</a>.<br />
<br />
He's joining my Joten Horde for mashing the adventurers.<br />

<br />
The ball keeps rolling, so next up direct from the shelf of shame is <a href="https://goo.gl/WY17aL" target="_blank">Reaper Miniature's Mountain Troll</a>, sculpted by Ben Siens, that looks like he escaped from an episode of He-man. I spent a decent amount of time cleaning the mold offset this guy suffered from ... see?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f3n-lhFuT_c/WIA1fOVtQQI/AAAAAAAAgQA/dymazlzLh9QtFdjEdarZVJhJpj4VHhMxQCLcB/s1600/Mountain%2BTroll%2B-%2BCleaning%2Band%2BPrep.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f3n-lhFuT_c/WIA1fOVtQQI/AAAAAAAAgQA/dymazlzLh9QtFdjEdarZVJhJpj4VHhMxQCLcB/s640/Mountain%2BTroll%2B-%2BCleaning%2Band%2BPrep.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I attacked the previously primed beasty with my regular size metal files. I managed to get a lot of the mold offset settled but I am fairly certain I couldn't resolve all of it so it will get painted into the "mini" to look like it belongs or to hide it.<br />
<br />
For this guy I plan to use my recently acquired <a href="https://goo.gl/3SOQNE" target="_blank">Reaper Moss Triad</a> as his skin tones. If you take a close look at his back in the next pics, you'll see that his muscles are long and segmented. They stand out quite nicely. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SuHIft8YmLw/WIA3ibMuU5I/AAAAAAAAgQM/1XO6RKlNzAcfiKkhdDgf0xmzWQThMVbBQCLcB/s1600/Mountain%2BTroll%2B-%2BSkin%2BTones.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="288" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SuHIft8YmLw/WIA3ibMuU5I/AAAAAAAAgQM/1XO6RKlNzAcfiKkhdDgf0xmzWQThMVbBQCLcB/s640/Mountain%2BTroll%2B-%2BSkin%2BTones.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As I painted the shadow color, <a href="https://goo.gl/kq51KX" target="_blank">Reaper Jungle Moss</a>, I realized that his muscles were laid out along the lines of the Abomination from the Incredible Hulk comics; not the one from the movie.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yn1Ca8jwgOc/WIA6XotV0YI/AAAAAAAAgQw/yAm4y5xettQmvJJ0xepEMZE_eaCpZ0W-QCLcB/s1600/Emil_Blonsky_%2528Earth-616%2529_from_Hulk_Vol_3_2_cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yn1Ca8jwgOc/WIA6XotV0YI/AAAAAAAAgQw/yAm4y5xettQmvJJ0xepEMZE_eaCpZ0W-QCLcB/s1600/Emil_Blonsky_%2528Earth-616%2529_from_Hulk_Vol_3_2_cover.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">© Marvel</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So after adding the midtone, <a href="https://goo.gl/UCvL4U" target="_blank">Reaper Highland Moss</a>, I added the highlight, <a href="https://goo.gl/ODkC7H" target="_blank">Reaper Pale Lichen</a>, along the length of the muscles at the bottom to give the impression of lizard scale or segments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HeQMZeXM2oE/WIA4BJhVOwI/AAAAAAAAgQQ/F2stENPrHU0KL5Lu54E4C1ZEh6BoE-9ngCLcB/s1600/Mountain%2BTroll%2B-%2BScaled%2BSkin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="288" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HeQMZeXM2oE/WIA4BJhVOwI/AAAAAAAAgQQ/F2stENPrHU0KL5Lu54E4C1ZEh6BoE-9ngCLcB/s640/Mountain%2BTroll%2B-%2BScaled%2BSkin.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This gave the big guy such a cool look. From here it's time to start on the other parts of him.<br />
<br />
I decided that I wanted to start with a really dark metal as the basecoat for his armor and weapon so I pulled out <a href="https://goo.gl/5RFRhS" target="_blank">Scale 75 Black Metal</a> and applied that. From there, I did the leather straps, pouch and his fanny pack (on his left hip) in <a href="https://goo.gl/ydcydb" target="_blank">Reaper Griffon Tan</a>. He has these adjusters on his straps and an arm band around his right bicep. So I first painted them with the <a href="https://goo.gl/ydcydb" target="_blank">Reaper Griffon Tan</a> and then went over those with another of my latest acquisitions, <a href="https://goo.gl/H9X6oV" target="_blank">The Army Painter Warpaints Wrath</a> color from the set, <a href="https://goo.gl/9H36bN" target="_blank">The Army Painter "The Others 7 Sins"</a>.<br />
<br />
Then the remaining leather and his horn got a sickly green basecoat of <a href="https://goo.gl/5qd4yL" target="_blank">The Army Painter Warpaints Envy</a> from the same set. This will get covered with some lighter colors up to an off white/light tan ... I think.<br />
<br />

At this point he kind of looks like the Abomination got community service working a crosswalk for a school with his safety colors. But those should mute a bit as I add more colors to this piece. I was tempted briefly to paint his axe red and slop paint the letters S.T. and O.P. in white on both sides.<br />
<br />
For those wondering, his base will receive some bark to represent rocks and I think a nicely piled set of freshly peeled skulls. He likes to organize them.<br />

<i>Copper Dragon on Marbled Tiled Hex Base</i></h2>
At the monthly Paint Day I host in Seneca Falls, NY ... Finger Lakes Paint and Game Day ... a Reaper forumite came up for a visit from down near NYC. He brought with him some great pieces of marble tiles that were left over from a floor installation. These tiles are 3/8 inches thick and one inch to a side hexagons of white marble. He gave me several before he left to return home.<br />
<br />
Not long after that day, I decided to utilize one of his amazing pieces of marble for the <a href="http://goo.gl/GOQlr9" target="_blank">Reaper Miniatures Young Swamp Dragon</a>, sculpted by Kevin Williams, that had been sitting in his blister pack on the wall above my work table. But I wanted to really utilize the gleaming white marble and pay an homage to the base. So using plastic squares as individually placed tiles I set out to make a marble floor on top of the marble base.<br />
<br />
The base turned out wonderfully. But what kind of dragon was I interested in painting? I certainly wasn't interested in making him a "swamp" dragon. After some thought and a comparison of size to some of my other dragons, I decided he would be a copper dragon.<br />
<br />
But that led to the idea that the copper dragons would molt their skins like lizards and snakes. This molting would in fact take the form of verdigris (copper rust) and form around the outside of the dragon as it slept for long periods. I set out to create a verdigris combination of paints to paint on his wings and underbelly.<br />
<br />
But after some conversations with other artists and a specific comment from the provider of the marble tile, I decided the dragon was shaking off his molt and scattering bits of the verdigris around the floor and that his wings were still not finished molting and that hardened bits were still attached to the dragon.<br />

<i>Harrow, Reidlar of Terror</i></h2>
<br />
I bought <a href="https://goo.gl/K1ARlB" target="_blank">Gauntfield</a> to specifically use him as my terrifying Reidlar
(embodiment of emotions/thoughts), Harrow, for my custom campaign,
Markshire. The miniature was perfect for the character ... a detailed
scarecrow with a scythe and a bag of bones and other tidbits who pulls
unwary adventurers and children into his "Courtyard" to terrorize them
with his smaller scarecrows stuffed with raven feathers and twisted ash
sticks.<br />
<br />
This great miniature by Bob Ridolfi was based on a metal slug and I
slowly created an eerie, dead tree from skewers, rocks, green stuff, and
finally green putty. Then after it was assembled and painted, I
decided he needed a pile of leaves around his legs. Ones drawn together
by his magic so you'll see traceries of fell yellow magic outlining the
leaves.<br />

<i class="amzn-taggable-text">The Frost Giantess</i></h2>
<br />
<a href="https://goo.gl/OVyNwt" target="_blank">Frulla Krung</a> was chosen as the next project by popular vote on the Reaper Miniatures forums. The miniature was sculpted by Sandra Garrity and the base was composed of a piece of slate, sand, ballast, and bark. You can see for yourself in the <a href="http://thrymstable.blogspot.com/2017/01/wip-frulla-krung-frost-giantess.html" target="_blank">WIP post</a>.<br />
<br />
The miniature is depicted as a frost giant so I gave her blue skin and instead of a classic blond look as most seem to get, I decided to keep hers dark blue. For the eyes I went with a bright grey iris to make them creepy, intense and stand out.<br />
<br />
She's clothed in the latest fashion of yellow fur trimming a classic leather bikini top and loincloth bottom. Her "Ugg" boots are wrapped with leather thongs and she likes a fur bracer.<br />
<br />
She's sporting a tribal necklace of teeth but with a pendant to match the bracelet on her arm. Her other accessory? The family battleaxe. A classic double headed axe with some amazing filigree work on the flat of the head. She'll claim a few heads with it next go around with the humans below.<br />
<br />
Her ancestral home is high within the mountains and thus covered in snow, ice and hoarfrost.<br />
<br />
Here she is ... <a href="https://goo.gl/OVyNwt" target="_blank">Frulla Krung, the Frost Giantess</a>!<br />

</h2>
<div>
I've been thinking about this since I got back into a regular amount of miniature work. Specifically with regards to skin tone triads for various monstrous races. What do you choose for a creature with blue skin, like a Frost Giant? I know a lot of painters determine a middle or base color and then pick a shadow color and a highlight color. There are also those that mix their colors using the base color as a starting point.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FpDV9H6Pjw4/WG_JGQnFHuI/AAAAAAAAf_Y/j9YflhWp-vYryU4CWPTbZm1Q8jzzcvZhQCLcB/s1600/feature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="196" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FpDV9H6Pjw4/WG_JGQnFHuI/AAAAAAAAf_Y/j9YflhWp-vYryU4CWPTbZm1Q8jzzcvZhQCLcB/s640/feature.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<br />
<div>
The problem with determining which three colors to pull off your shelf or outright buy is the relative value of color for each. </div>
<br />
<div>
Reaper Miniatures produces a paint triad for several common skin tones in their Master Series Paint line. These include groups called <a href="https://goo.gl/GRNPPN" target="_blank">Suntanned</a>, <a href="https://goo.gl/IefZsI" target="_blank">Bronzed</a>, and <a href="https://goo.gl/A2ZwSU" target="_blank">Rosy</a> as well as fantasy favorites like <a href="https://goo.gl/LtXn3P" target="_blank">Dark Elf Skin</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/ztKmby" target="_blank">Vampiric Skin</a>. They put together three colors that work well for that type of skin tone and make it easier for their customers to create the look they want.</div>
<br />
<div>
But what about your non-standard player character races like Trolls, Giants, or even Minotaurs and Lizardfolk. I don’t want to use the same green triad I picked out for my Troll as I use for my Lizardfolk. What’s a good method for determining which three colors to pick from what is available out there?</div>
<br />
<div>
For one, a lot of the fantasy paint companies produce groups of paint … like Scale Colour from Scale 75. Got an Orc or Goblin you want painted … no problem … buy the <a href="https://goo.gl/YFFbuI" style="text-decoration: none;">Orc and Goblin kit</a> and everything you need is pre-determined. They even provide a guide to help you lay paint consistently.</div>
<br />
<div>
But What About Monsters Not Covered by Hobby Paint Companies?</div>
<br />
<div>
Let’s get back to my Frost Giant. Which colors best represent the Frost Giant in my gaming world?</div>
<br />
<div>
<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: "arial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 700; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Frost Giant Blue with Highlight and Shadow:</span></div>
<div>
<img alt="frost giant skin.jpg" height="122" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/JSy1u_XfxFg_q-YVOmKYOJSW6OwvPk1GxZYU0Key0LHybWu94V6gO_pBLt72WMCyGGrE6_UidcP1OgJCEtOsyPNsz2Pc4gt3oyqwYbZU5DpB0SHmQ7jppF44ej88LF-33vBBJTx8" style="-webkit-transform: rotate(0.00rad); border: none; transform: rotate(0.00rad);" width="400" /></div>
<br />
<div>
I picked the above three colors from an already painted miniature using <a href="https://color.adobe.com/">Adobe Color</a>. I uploaded the photo to their website and picked the three spots that I felt best represented the three shades of the mini’s skin. See example image below and note that the image above is not the exact same as what I am finding on my own miniature but the swatches do come close to matching the colors I actually used on Frulla. </div>
<br />
<div>
<img height="379" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/qM-dwUrc-BUbGhZxkn4ufSAlHfsp4Ql6Zru6xzfpFT6rPrSfTUu7urX9o7gSJYpGRdWs1r1_S3ECes74QnNGpIJhXFe6DJa1fKuV3-LoUe9KoS62D7OyudOTKP9bZ-kzXk9FjfxD" style="border: medium none; transform: rotate(0rad);" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div>
The only issue with this method; this is a screen color and we’re dealing with paint colors. However, this can get you in the ballpark of picking paint colors. Nearly every paint company provides on screen examples of their colors. </div>
<br />
<div>
It’s time to pick your colors. Now, I don’t own every color from any one manufacturer … not for lack of trying. And that’s only because of the enormous expense of buying these little bottles of color. I imagine most people don’t either, but you can look for the on screen examples of what you do own.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<hr />
<div>
<h2>
Sidetrack: Pearltrees and Evernote</h2>
</div>
<br />
<div>
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: #e06666; font-family: "arial"; font-style: italic; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">At some point you have probably decided that you need to catalog every paint, miniature, brush, stamp, etc. you own. I’ve done it for most everything I own that is essentially a collection. I have over 200 craft paints, over 100 hobby paints, over 750 miniatures and nearly as many movies on DVD or Blu-ray. When out and about or contemplating an online order while at work, it’s hard to remember every single color you own. So, I recommend Pearltrees.com for their excellent cataloging program for Desktop or App. It’s the closest thing to my original favorite, SpringPad; now defunct. The other contender is Evernote. It’s worth checking out if you prefer a more spreadsheet methodology of maintaining your collection. I prefer a more visual approach.</span></div>
<br />
<div>

<br />
<ul style="margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">

Frulla Krung</h1>
</div>
<h2 style="color: #cfe2f3; font-size: 36px; text-align: center;">
<i class="amzn-taggable-text">The Frost Giantess</i></h2>
In the continued effort to clear off the shelf of shame ... er, clear off some of the miniatures that were "started" and have been sitting on the shelf of shame for some time ... I have grabbed <a href="https://goo.gl/OVyNwt" target="_blank">Frulla Krung, Frost Giantess from Reaper Miniatures</a>. She was simply glued to a piece of slate but technically had been started.<br />
<br />
Here's what was done:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j5AGXwI0R1k/WGnL-BRkDFI/AAAAAAAAf7I/E6L6afIbSRESu8WTPZnWjYfPWe1ddj5PgCLcB/s1600/post-7739-0-95384900-1482814273.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j5AGXwI0R1k/WGnL-BRkDFI/AAAAAAAAf7I/E6L6afIbSRESu8WTPZnWjYfPWe1ddj5PgCLcB/s1600/post-7739-0-95384900-1482814273.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Not much, right. So, why Frulla? Surely, some of my other started projects need to be finished?<br />
<br />
Yup. I decided to put the next project up for <a href="https://goo.gl/MZOXTr" target="_blank">a vote over on Reaper Miniatures' forums</a> and she was the clear winner.<br />
<br />
Let's get to the WIP so far.<br />
<br />
So up first, Frulla was cleaned and primed:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zIDR3-la31g/WGnPlXH3s-I/AAAAAAAAf7U/2iYGs4qBfk8YvrhHXfSxV9Xdb_9SFy1VACLcB/s1600/Frula%2B-%2BCleaned%2B%2526%2BPrimed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zIDR3-la31g/WGnPlXH3s-I/AAAAAAAAf7U/2iYGs4qBfk8YvrhHXfSxV9Xdb_9SFy1VACLcB/s400/Frula%2B-%2BCleaned%2B%2526%2BPrimed.jpg" width="311" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I started in on the basing by adding two pieces of bark.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pOcLVGaM7Qo/WGnP6VLc5SI/AAAAAAAAf7Y/s1Gdt5PRF6k4_qiDtfzB8xzLlM7yq_t0QCLcB/s1600/post-7739-0-70382000-1483058882.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pOcLVGaM7Qo/WGnP6VLc5SI/AAAAAAAAf7Y/s1Gdt5PRF6k4_qiDtfzB8xzLlM7yq_t0QCLcB/s640/post-7739-0-70382000-1483058882.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Once those larger rocks were in place, I added super glue and sand to fill around the integral base. Then after the glue set, I added some <a class="amzn_view_checked" href="https://goo.gl/2L8yxZ" target="_blank">Squadron Green Putty</a> to smooth out the "snow" in places and fill some cracks of the wood "rock".
<br />
<br />
The bark was then cut closer to the slate and after adding some
"cut-ins" along those cut edges, I decided to add another small bit of
rock behind her and toward the middle.<br />
<br />
After setting that in place, I used some more super glue and sand to
fill some snow between the two rocks and around the new rock.<br />
<br />
To improve the exterior sides, I started filing the outside edges and the slate. I decided to seal the wood with a layer of super glue. Once that was set, I filed the cut-ins smooth and cleaned some edges.<br />
<br />
With everything set and dried, I finished priming the base and did a wash of primer to get into the smallest details.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JwM-9BqR1TQ/WGnXbzDMQ9I/AAAAAAAAf7w/dc1tk5yY-WwXoAseykGQuXHN0VBW6bkvACLcB/s1600/Frulla%2BKrung%2B-%2BBased%2Band%2BPrimed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JwM-9BqR1TQ/WGnXbzDMQ9I/AAAAAAAAf7w/dc1tk5yY-WwXoAseykGQuXHN0VBW6bkvACLcB/s640/Frulla%2BKrung%2B-%2BBased%2Band%2BPrimed.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZBoCGDlfUoA/WGnXb_Wn1eI/AAAAAAAAf7s/Wl_dWbAkCVsQDLfaTOBKtSX9hCZ3PVowACEw/s1600/Frulla%2BKrung%2B-%2BBased%2Band%2BPrimed%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="366" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZBoCGDlfUoA/WGnXb_Wn1eI/AAAAAAAAf7s/Wl_dWbAkCVsQDLfaTOBKtSX9hCZ3PVowACEw/s640/Frulla%2BKrung%2B-%2BBased%2Band%2BPrimed%2B1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zba7kL9lSik/WGnXb-pj0WI/AAAAAAAAf70/e4yq-N-jCyIgQQMggKdbdyywrFv-SVdmQCEw/s1600/Frulla%2BKrung%2B-%2BBased%2Band%2BPrimed%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="366" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zba7kL9lSik/WGnXb-pj0WI/AAAAAAAAf70/e4yq-N-jCyIgQQMggKdbdyywrFv-SVdmQCEw/s640/Frulla%2BKrung%2B-%2BBased%2Band%2BPrimed%2B2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided to take a close up of the base:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qEW0Yhc5lQ8/WGnX1LT1FbI/AAAAAAAAf74/4TlQUTZtd1ArnPlaEub2Yc5p0rBxLxXRACLcB/s1600/post-7739-0-57535200-1483077785.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qEW0Yhc5lQ8/WGnX1LT1FbI/AAAAAAAAf74/4TlQUTZtd1ArnPlaEub2Yc5p0rBxLxXRACLcB/s640/post-7739-0-57535200-1483077785.jpg" width="552" /></a></div>
<br />
Now that the base was finished and it was time to start lining Frulla. I used <a href="https://goo.gl/EnaaPS" target="_blank">Reaper Nightmare Black</a> which is very dark blue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mctL37bXp4g/WGnZG-3ueaI/AAAAAAAAf8I/_JYdZc8ZY9UGjw7KGkX0_NGvqU04HHaewCLcB/s1600/post-7739-0-13789500-1483228627.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mctL37bXp4g/WGnZG-3ueaI/AAAAAAAAf8I/_JYdZc8ZY9UGjw7KGkX0_NGvqU04HHaewCLcB/s640/post-7739-0-13789500-1483228627.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also got the basecoats started. <a href="https://goo.gl/WVBQTH" target="_blank">Reaper Woodland Brown</a> for her outfit and <a class="amzn_view_checked" href="https://goo.gl/Cq8cVS" target="_blank">Reaper Dragon Blue</a> for her skin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Then a bit more using <a href="https://goo.gl/BFhKsN" target="_blank">Vallejo Flat Yellow</a> and a wash of my "Dirt" mixture (<a href="https://goo.gl/Mxq3wd" target="_blank">Reaper Walnut Brown</a>, <a href="https://goo.gl/wGkG52" target="_blank">Reaper Rainy Grey</a>, <a class="amzn_view_checked" href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Pancer Aces Stencil</a>).<br />

Roving the Streets <br />~ Daughter's Christmas Gift ~</h2>
</div>
Okay, so I started painting this shortly after I gave it to my daughter for Christmas ... 2014. He languished in a box, in my kit, on and off for the last two years.<br />
<br />
A while back I pulled him out and applied a new paint, <a href="https://goo.gl/UK2ena" target="_blank">Scale 75 Amethyst Alchemy</a>, as a wash over his already green and purple body to give him a metallic look and feel.<br />
<br />
And now in my recent kick to clear some Shelf of shame Space, I have FINISHED this Jabberwocky. Whew. Just in time to "re-gift" it to her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

All in all, he was an interesting build and paint. The only thing I don't care for on this mini was the sculptor's treatment of the claws. They were kind of armor-like and didn't quite fit in with the overall esthetic of the mini.<br />

<i>Stalking the Steps</i></h2>
This 25mm scale Fire Giant isn't humongous by today's miniature line standards but he has a lot of character. The sculptors, Chaz Elliot and then apprentice, Jason Wiebe, put a lot of great detail into this fellow. I personally love the knowing grin on his face. However, partly because of the scale and the sculpted position of the giant, I felt he wasn't set up right. So he was reposed a smidge.<br />
<br />
When I first looked him over at the work table, I held him on a slab of slate and tried to visualize him on a game board. It's fairly obvious that he was originally meant to be looking down at the puny humans before him but against the more prolific 28-32mm scale miniatures I own, he was looking at their chests or groins.<br />
<br />
So after playing around with slate pieces such, I finally figure him out. He needed his sword level. Well his arms were tight to his chest so repositioning the weapon that way would require practically resculpting him. But ... if I cut apart the integral base and and changed the elevation of his feet he looked like he was slinking up some stairs.<br />
<br />
Thus the step and repose.<br />
<br />
You can check out his painting <a href="https://goo.gl/7keBFn" target="_blank">WIP 1</a> & <a href="https://goo.gl/RhzHak" target="_blank">WIP 2</a>. The repositioning and base construction was done a long time ago before I was doing WIP posts.<br />
<br />
Enjoy.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Surtur's son is coming along nicely through <a href="https://goo.gl/RhzHak" target="_blank">the initial WIP</a>. After the last post he received some detailing. Starting with <a href="https://goo.gl/csiVh7" target="_blank">Reaper Terran Khaki</a> "highlights" to his eyebrows, sideburns and topknot scalp line. After that I blended them in to soften the transition a bit. I also used <a href="https://goo.gl/csiVh7" target="_blank">Reaper Terran Khaki</a> for his teeth and eyes. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
His armor segments are <a href="https://goo.gl/Cq8cVS" target="_blank">Reaper Dragon Blue</a>. The shoulder segments front section are <a href="https://goo.gl/BOf6nI" target="_blank">Reaper LED Blue</a>. <div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Then at our local Paint Day I worked mainly on his base. One of the comments I received was that the model lacked a sense of scale compared to regular size
humans, etc. so I added some skeleton pieces to the base and then worked in some vines.<br />
<br />
I primed the bones with <a href="https://goo.gl/fojWUy" target="_blank">Reaper Grey Primer</a> and then covered them with my favorite aging paint, Reaper Promo Rattlesnake Leather.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tzij2modEyo/WFgBK9SWKZI/AAAAAAAAfmY/D60WUuJ6mj0P74qIcO6IFP9k_DKf1_iTwCLcB/s1600/Fire%2BGiant%2B-%2BBase%2BBones%2Band%2BVegetation%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tzij2modEyo/WFgBK9SWKZI/AAAAAAAAfmY/D60WUuJ6mj0P74qIcO6IFP9k_DKf1_iTwCLcB/s640/Fire%2BGiant%2B-%2BBase%2BBones%2Band%2BVegetation%2B1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the vegetation was set I painted the vines with a dirt wash (<a href="https://goo.gl/Mxq3wd" target="_blank">Reaper Walnut Brown</a>, <a href="https://goo.gl/wGkG52" target="_blank">Reaper Rainy Grey</a>, <a class="amzn_view_checked" href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Pancer Aces Stencil</a>). I added a bush next to the giant's right knee.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sD5rPtzQPn0/WFgCIa05sHI/AAAAAAAAfmg/rgGlXVe-HCUVVOANpxEBVJlZfhWwGko2ACLcB/s1600/Fire%2BGiant%2B-%2BBase%2BBones%2Band%2BVegetation%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sD5rPtzQPn0/WFgCIa05sHI/AAAAAAAAfmg/rgGlXVe-HCUVVOANpxEBVJlZfhWwGko2ACLcB/s640/Fire%2BGiant%2B-%2BBase%2BBones%2Band%2BVegetation%2B2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The slate surfaces received a mixture of <a href="https://goo.gl/fojWUy" target="_blank">Reaper Grey Primer</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/ZWLYuJ" target="_blank">Reaper Solid Black</a>. Additional edging along the vertical edges are <a href="https://goo.gl/wGkG52" target="_blank">Reaper Rainy Grey</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/DPVQTy" target="_blank">Vallejo Neutral Grey</a><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
The bush is from the same piece of moss that I used for the vines. It was tightly packed near one end. I glued it to a paper clip end with super glue. Then I cut away some of the bottom to make it the right size. The bush then received two watered down glue bathes to harden it up a bit. Once one bath had set, it got a second. Once that had set, it received the same dirt wash and the paper clip was twisted into a round base to glue in place.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The bush's base was then covered in sand to cover the glue and blend it into the rest of the giant's base.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once everything was completely dry, I started to put the finishing touches on the base.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ltdo-mOk8mM/WFgEAk2fQqI/AAAAAAAAfms/DdVlKiP0ipAzJV5NP5cmX_Nu-tr2Dw7mQCLcB/s1600/Fire%2BGiant%2B-%2BBase%2BFinished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ltdo-mOk8mM/WFgEAk2fQqI/AAAAAAAAfms/DdVlKiP0ipAzJV5NP5cmX_Nu-tr2Dw7mQCLcB/s640/Fire%2BGiant%2B-%2BBase%2BFinished.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The black primed "dirt" between the slate pieces received a wash of Reaper Rattlesnake Leather and then a drybrush of <a href="https://goo.gl/mqjPkW" target="_blank">Reaper Palomino Gold</a>. The bush and the vines also received a drybrush of <a href="https://goo.gl/mqjPkW" target="_blank">Reaper Palomino Gold</a>.<br />
<br />
The slate received edging with <a class="amzn_view_checked" href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Pancer Aces Stencil</a> and then repeated dirt washes to get the collected sediment look along several edges.<br />
<br />
With the base in the ballpark of what I was looking for it was time to return to the giant. Well his sword.<br />
<br />
The sword received <a href="http://goo.gl/fKh9ZM" target="_blank">Reaper Scorched Metal</a> for the blade's edges. I decided I wanted a molten background through the flat of the sword.
So, I used <a href="https://goo.gl/nkgVpZ" target="_blank">Reaper Rach Red</a> and then added a pattern over the red using <a href="https://goo.gl/hWGYQV" target="_blank">Vallejo Glossy Black</a>. The flat of the blade is then outlined with <a class="amzn_view_checked" href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Pancer Aces Stencil</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XUbIkW5ksSs/WFgGFFkNWCI/AAAAAAAAfm4/H70R1363UQoC48w8MrLol_P5G_0v8584ACLcB/s1600/Fire%2BGiant%2B-%2BSword.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XUbIkW5ksSs/WFgGFFkNWCI/AAAAAAAAfm4/H70R1363UQoC48w8MrLol_P5G_0v8584ACLcB/s400/Fire%2BGiant%2B-%2BSword.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
That was all I had time for Saturday night.<br />

This is another old mini that has been sitting on the shelf of shame for some time. I removed the integral base. I liked his pose but not where he was looking, so I wanted to have him stalking someone while walking up a set of steps. This brings his sword parallel with the ground and has him looking forward instead of at his feet.<br />
<br />

<br />
He rested on the shelf primed black with his armor a Phthalo Blue. I cleaned off the dust in preparation to resume work on him. And then cleaned up the black primer with some <a href="https://goo.gl/QTTQ6C" target="_blank">Reaper Solid Black</a>.<br />
<br />
Here he is when I first picked him back up:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
After a little clean up, some black paint, a basecoat of his skin with <a href="https://goo.gl/TKcGed" target="_blank">Reaper Red Shadow</a>, and the application of some <a href="https://goo.gl/2L8yxZ" target="_blank">Squadron Green Putty</a> to flatten off the step's sides. Which should give it a bit more of a "built" look to the step.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4s5UZgg8FuA/WE8VyfyPdsI/AAAAAAAAfOs/uoqfzWS4B1gpx1MvAL6nHIzCSJ-zK_FHwCLcB/s1600/fire-giant-green-putty-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4s5UZgg8FuA/WE8VyfyPdsI/AAAAAAAAfOs/uoqfzWS4B1gpx1MvAL6nHIzCSJ-zK_FHwCLcB/s200/fire-giant-green-putty-1.jpg" width="163" /></a>

<br />
From there I decided that his skin was a bit too dark for what I was looking for, so I went over the <a href="https://goo.gl/TKcGed" target="_blank">Reaper Red Shadow</a> with some <a href="https://goo.gl/mIHo3L" target="_blank">Reaper Auburn Shadow</a>. This was much closer to where I had decided to take my Fire Giants' skin tones.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
You can also see in the pics above that the step is more of a single piece with sections to it than three pieces of slate sitting atop one another. Of course this covered up the piece of his integral base that his toes are still attached to on that step.<br />
<br />
From here, I started shading his skin back with the <a href="https://goo.gl/TKcGed" target="_blank">Reaper Red Shadow</a> to enhance the bits of "lining" I had incorporated above. Then I added <a href="https://goo.gl/rPF1ZO" target="_blank">Reaper Ruddy Brown</a> as a basecoat for his furs and <a href="https://goo.gl/2DIX4u" target="_blank">Reaper Midnight Black</a> as a basecoat for his chainmail below his furs and hanging from his skullcap. His hair is <a href="https://goo.gl/nkgVpZ" target="_blank">Reaper Rach Red</a> to give it that sort of flame appearance.<br />

Someone on the Reaper Forums asked for a bit of scale to see how big this giant really is. As you can see below, compared to some other giants available out there, he's kind of puny but still big enough to be considered a giant.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
I cleaned, repaired and repainted a long time baddy from our gaming
sessions, <a href="https://goo.gl/44ERFa" target="_blank">Reaper's Giant Mountain Troll</a>. He had fallen to the floor a
few times over the years and had a gloss coat instead of a matte coat
for a sealer. So he was quite due for the treatment.<br />
<br />
Given his look and feel, I decided to paint him as an older troll.
His skin is duller. His hair receding considerably. He hasn't fought
anyone in a long time. Even the boar for his dinner wasn't much of a
hunt. So he's kept his clothing in relatively good repair and found and
made some better furs to wear. He still prefers his old stone axe. He
was happy to find some stone laced with mithral to make a new axe head
for it though.<br />

So, you can see from the pics above that it was started and had an interesting idea to it. It just got sidelined like so many of my projects. "Real-life-interruptus!" Now, you may be wondering ... "hey, that looks like a real piece of glass or crystal in his hand." Well, I doubt you did until you read that, but it's a paint; specifically, <a href="https://goo.gl/igq6LY" target="_blank">DecoArt's Americana Gloss Enamel Dioxazine Purple</a>. It's glass acrylic enamel that takes quite a long time to air cure or can be baked.

If you haven't figured it out by now, I enjoy giants, and I have prolly said as much here more than once. There are many more giants in the queue that is my shelf of shame. However, I am doing my damnedest to move the queue.</div><br>
<div class="amzn-taggable-text amzn_view_checked" style="text-align: left;">
A long while ago I picked up this hunk of metal named, aptly, Lunkh. Much like the <a href="https://goo.gl/8THD7t" target="_blank">Ogre Mage, Master Phthalo</a>, I based him on a two-inch square piece of shale along with stones, sand and ballast. He got a primer coat of some tan paint I had on hand at the time and was promptly shelved in my home office.</div><br>

Garrity from <a href="https://goo.gl/17VbJl" target="_blank">Reaper Miniatures</a>, came out of the carry box to get cleaned, repainted, and
repaired. His nose suffered a long drop to the floor which flattened his bulbous nose considerably.<br />

From there he received priming using <a href="https://goo.gl/fojWUy" target="_blank">Reaper Grey Primer</a>.<br />

<li>Fur: <a href="https://goo.gl/mIHo3L" target="_blank">Reaper Auburn Shadow</a> over <a href="https://goo.gl/TKcGed" target="_blank">Reaper Red Shadow</a></li>
</ul>
Some initial details added:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyyvrnNzyak/WDxj2d9d9HI/AAAAAAAAe6M/7dNt4rZXDjsnEhGruEBmRaMVn4oo53HawCLcB/s1600/First%2BDetails.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyyvrnNzyak/WDxj2d9d9HI/AAAAAAAAe6M/7dNt4rZXDjsnEhGruEBmRaMVn4oo53HawCLcB/s640/First%2BDetails.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I mixed a weathering wash from ...<br />
<ul>
<li> <a href="https://goo.gl/Mxq3wd" target="_blank">Reaper Walnut Brown</a></li>
<li> <a href="https://goo.gl/rPF1ZO" target="_blank">Reaper Ruddy Brown</a></li>
<li><a href="https://goo.gl/DPVQTy" target="_blank">Vallejo Neutral Gray</a></li>
</ul>
You can see the coloring from the weathering wash best on his pants below his knees.<br />
<br />
His skin is highlighted with some <a href="https://goo.gl/BFmJIZ" target="_blank">Reaper Jungle Camo</a> mixed with <a href="https://goo.gl/FHW62T" target="_blank">Vallejo Yellow Green</a>. His teeth and hair are highlighted with <a href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Pancer Aces Stencil</a>. And his hair is greyed with <a href="https://goo.gl/wGkG52" target="_blank">Reaper Rainy Grey</a> mixed with some <a href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Pancer Aces Stencil</a>.<br />
<br />
The boar is also mainly white with some darker grey along his spine and then some of my weather wash applied along the spine as well. <br />
<br />
Decisions:<br />
<br />
I decided that his hair should be white because he looks a bit older than your usual troll from Reaper. As I painted his face and head, it further implied he was older and more world worn. So this informed his clothes a bit as well; a better shirt with less wear and bolder color, a nicer fur from an animal with colors matching his shirt. But his pants are still dirty and worn on the cuffs from living in the woods, near the swamps.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f5uKpyw4UIw/WCnfGzhraQI/AAAAAAAAevk/h6nnaIREgJsYiHd8gHPXby1Wz-PIL9higCLcB/s1600/Leaves%2B-%2BFirst%2BLayer%2BDried.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f5uKpyw4UIw/WCnfGzhraQI/AAAAAAAAevk/h6nnaIREgJsYiHd8gHPXby1Wz-PIL9higCLcB/s400/Leaves%2B-%2BFirst%2BLayer%2BDried.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Given that it's fall here in the Finger Lakes of New York and with leaves still turning and falling from the trees, I really wanted to do a pile of leaves at Gauntfield's feet. I buried part of his boots with sand and glue to start the mound of leaves when I added him to his base.<br />
<br />
Last week I bought a <a href="https://goo.gl/LT21Cn" target="_blank">Falling Leaves Border Punch</a> that punches out two maple leaves, a smaller beech leaf and an acorn. With that I punched out some red, orange and yellow paper to create a pile of leaves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://goo.gl/LT21Cn" target="_blank"><img alt="https://goo.gl/LT21Cn" border="0" height="213" src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61sGJkKKMVL._SL600_.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3d-DsuWlF1c/WCn0BMXQXSI/AAAAAAAAev4/3P8vyRtUZb0_EZ1wyUoXhkht0UlX1fx6ACLcB/s1600/leaves-cut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3d-DsuWlF1c/WCn0BMXQXSI/AAAAAAAAev4/3P8vyRtUZb0_EZ1wyUoXhkht0UlX1fx6ACLcB/s400/leaves-cut.jpg" width="261" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see above they are a nice combo of leaves. However, the edges are white from the paper and they are very plain looking.<br />
<br />
I placed them all in a container and applied a wash of <a href="https://goo.gl/Mxq3wd" target="_blank">Reaper Walnut Brown</a>. I keep a small bottle of that wash available all the time for glazing shadows, etc. The edges darkened up and the leaves took on a much darker appearance.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wYnlMlQpRgw/WCn1ebvcXvI/AAAAAAAAewA/-DRyeGBCW7ExpuHV3UTOI847SdtYA0JDACLcB/s1600/leaves-drying.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wYnlMlQpRgw/WCn1ebvcXvI/AAAAAAAAewA/-DRyeGBCW7ExpuHV3UTOI847SdtYA0JDACLcB/s640/leaves-drying.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see in the photo that the red and yellow darkened up significantly and the orange didn't seem to soak in the paint nearly as much. After drying on some parchment paper for a while, I roughed them up in my hands a bit and separated out the maple leaves from the rest. They really are just too big for the scale. The others are a bit oversized but they aren't too bad.<br />
<br />
To add some variation to the leaf edges, I did cut some of the maple leaves into thirds and included them in the mix to go on Gauntfield. So with some white glue mixed with water, I piled some on the mini. They tended to lay flat while soaked so I bent some with the tweezers as I applied them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lTIh3Wkg67k/WCn2UvPJ9GI/AAAAAAAAewE/-l5px0o-aJYCUznKwrBQUUZOEORH9O2ygCLcB/s1600/Leaves%2B-%2BApplied%2BFirst%2BLayer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lTIh3Wkg67k/WCn2UvPJ9GI/AAAAAAAAewE/-l5px0o-aJYCUznKwrBQUUZOEORH9O2ygCLcB/s400/Leaves%2B-%2BApplied%2BFirst%2BLayer.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Above you can see the first layer I used. At the very bottom are a few of the full maple leaves to set some edges. The acorns look like leaves in the mix. It took a while but the first layer dried nicely. Next I will paint some variations and shading on to the showing leaves before adding the second layer. The intent is to get the pile near the top of his boot next to his scythe handle. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f5uKpyw4UIw/WCnfGzhraQI/AAAAAAAAevs/2YQBerHhDJ00tmLyCTT8HC8j__EmmhlGgCEw/s1600/Leaves%2B-%2BFirst%2BLayer%2BDried.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="368" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f5uKpyw4UIw/WCnfGzhraQI/AAAAAAAAevs/2YQBerHhDJ00tmLyCTT8HC8j__EmmhlGgCEw/s640/Leaves%2B-%2BFirst%2BLayer%2BDried.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Some of you might be asking yourselves, "Why not punch real leaves?" I did punch real leaves. Unfortunately, they are much harder to insert into the wide punch. If it was an individual punch, I could easily punch leaves. So I settled for punching paper this go around.<br />
<br />

I picked up this guy a while ago. He's an
actual lead miniature from the Reaper P-65 Heavy Metal line that was
later discontinued. The Bones material is much cheaper and far easier
cut and convert.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Not long after I got him, I based him on a

some basecoating using craft paints I had.</div>

I recently decided to pick him back up and put some effort into him. You can check out the WIP posts to see everything I did to get him here. <a href="https://goo.gl/e5N3l5" target="_blank">WIP 1</a> | <a href="https://goo.gl/SUJi03" target="_blank">WIP 2</a></div>

Amusingly, it's another of Jason Wiebe's sculpts, so there are tons of detail on it.<br />
<br />
He's mostly finished and you can see the process in the WIP below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I2D8ah_zQRE/WCYhea6OlEI/AAAAAAAAenY/ubhOtuDdKlsCn2RJA8UySL4K_NCbskjTwCLcB/s1600/WIP%2B-%2BLunkh%2BDetails.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="596" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I2D8ah_zQRE/WCYhea6OlEI/AAAAAAAAenY/ubhOtuDdKlsCn2RJA8UySL4K_NCbskjTwCLcB/s640/WIP%2B-%2BLunkh%2BDetails.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I started out with lining the tan primed mini with <a href="https://goo.gl/yVOJor" target="_blank">Reaper Gray Liner</a> and testing out some flesh tones and settled on <a href="https://goo.gl/YSbdo7" target="_blank">Reaper Tanned Shadow</a> as the middle tone.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F9T8jwxB14I/WCYh4fUrkzI/AAAAAAAAenc/alLQ1SDjPagygd4q1Gr0c-NNfmua4gU8wCLcB/s1600/WIP%2B-%2BLunkh%2BLined.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F9T8jwxB14I/WCYh4fUrkzI/AAAAAAAAenc/alLQ1SDjPagygd4q1Gr0c-NNfmua4gU8wCLcB/s400/WIP%2B-%2BLunkh%2BLined.jpg" width="208" /></a></div>
<br />
From there I started assigning colors to his various furs and the armor under his fur vest.<br />
<br />

<br />
I cleaned up his belly and added <a href="https://goo.gl/btJ2rv" target="_blank">Reaper Carrottop Red</a> to his hair and touched up the colors around the piece. The jacket got a bit of <a href="https://goo.gl/nIE5nn" target="_blank">Vallejo Japanese Uniform WWII</a> dried brushed over the fur. His arm furs were painted with more <a href="https://goo.gl/nIE5nn" target="_blank">Vallejo Japanese Uniform WWII</a>.<br />

His eyes are <a href="https://goo.gl/BGdHK5" target="_blank">Army Painter Hydra Turquoise</a> and tongue is <a href="https://goo.gl/TKcGed" target="_blank">Reaper Red Shadow</a>.<br />
<br />
He's pretty close to finished so the next post will be his show off piece. Stay tuned.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04805659278399865728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5426404161075682517.post-27115158544463879162016-11-07T14:00:00.000-05:002016-11-07T14:00:25.267-05:00WIP 2 :: Ogre Mage :: Reaper Miniatures P-65 Heavy Metal<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
After a lengthy battle, I stood triumphant over the defeated form of my
enemy ... Procrastination! <br />
<br />
I got into the details and clean up of the
Ogre Mage from Reaper's discontinued lead line, P-65 Heavy Metal. <a href="https://goo.gl/al4wU5" target="_blank">You can still get the mini in in some locations that have older stock or you can get the white metal version.</a><br />
<br />
The initial shots before a final round of details. I used a background this time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DIbBeNfbGLI/WCCg776sgLI/AAAAAAAAeig/2vvMwe8hHnYlPDG42TbjBacRAfdmYV54gCLcB/s1600/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BDetails%2B-%2BFront%2BBack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DIbBeNfbGLI/WCCg776sgLI/AAAAAAAAeig/2vvMwe8hHnYlPDG42TbjBacRAfdmYV54gCLcB/s400/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BDetails%2B-%2BFront%2BBack.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4aMXPYo5cbA/WCCg6636O9I/AAAAAAAAeic/C77_68t6X84aEMfDrjbHqi0rW8DbC5QjwCEw/s1600/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BDetails%2B-%2BFront%2BLeft%2BRight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4aMXPYo5cbA/WCCg6636O9I/AAAAAAAAeic/C77_68t6X84aEMfDrjbHqi0rW8DbC5QjwCEw/s400/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BDetails%2B-%2BFront%2BLeft%2BRight.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AOV0-dWJQOI/WCCg6kRVVtI/AAAAAAAAeiY/7bmdQDSg5C48UA02msj2JPJPBib9poenQCEw/s1600/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BDetails%2B-%2BBack%2BLeft%2BRight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AOV0-dWJQOI/WCCg6kRVVtI/AAAAAAAAeiY/7bmdQDSg5C48UA02msj2JPJPBib9poenQCEw/s400/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BDetails%2B-%2BBack%2BLeft%2BRight.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I glazed his hair with <a href="https://goo.gl/yVOJor" target="_blank">Reaper Grey Liner</a> to let some of the original blue color through. <br />
<br />
His eyes were cleaned up again ... not my favorite thing to do and his teeth received a Reaper Rattlesnake Leather wash to yellow them a bit, then some <a href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Panzer Aces Stencil</a> to whiten them back up. <br />
<br />
The pack cover got another wash of a purple, this time <a href="https://goo.gl/TBDkFj" target="_blank">Reaper Malvernian Purple</a>. <br />
<br />
A very ornate bracer is on his weapon hand, so I tackled that with some <a href="https://goo.gl/zrpCL1" target="_blank">Reaper Old Bronze</a> for the edging and the dragon. The flower over his hand is <a href="https://goo.gl/9KbI2k" target="_blank">Reaper Witchcraft Purple</a> with a <a href="https://goo.gl/nkgVpZ" target="_blank">Reaper Rach Red</a> highlight on each petal surrounded by <a href="https://goo.gl/YKKpO5" target="_blank">Reaper Pale Saffron</a> flowers. Two globes to the right of the dragon face on the bracer received Reaper Witchcraft Purple.<br />
<br />
The weapon grip is pretty much just a straight wash of Reaper Rattlesnake Leather (promo color). The two "pins" in the grip are <a href="https://goo.gl/9KbI2k" target="_blank">Reaper Witchcraft Purple</a>, as well as the pommel stone, the crossbar of the hilt, and the ring above the pommel butt. The pommel butt is <a href="https://goo.gl/nkgVpZ" target="_blank">Reaper Rach Red</a>. Blade is <a href="https://goo.gl/D0vjOi" target="_blank">Reaper Tarnished Steel</a> for the edge of the blade, <a href="https://goo.gl/1Rw5YA" target="_blank">Reaper Templar Blue</a> for the back of the blade with a seam of <a href="https://goo.gl/2DIX4u" target="_blank">Reaper Midnight Blue</a> separating the two.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://goo.gl/eujnN7" target="_blank">Reaper Adonese Green</a> was used to color one of his pouches (behind the Water Goblin on his back) and the ties to his bracer.<br />
<br />
His necklace is <a href="http://Reaper Rach Red" target="_blank">Reaper Rach Red</a> along with the various ring weights around his wrist and from his belt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8c37pjkh1wQ/WCCgF5Ef3CI/AAAAAAAAeik/iNbfPWVqMqsaIOSkxZOeGwSGBYs6g5cEwCEw/s1600/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BFinished%2BMini%2B1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="279" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8c37pjkh1wQ/WCCgF5Ef3CI/AAAAAAAAeik/iNbfPWVqMqsaIOSkxZOeGwSGBYs6g5cEwCEw/s320/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BFinished%2BMini%2B1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KeaqiDyZj6E/WCCgF1j4IcI/AAAAAAAAeik/aUjIwy3_sRMhgeTJ40hXGGgc1VbJAm53QCEw/s1600/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BFinished%2BMini%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KeaqiDyZj6E/WCCgF1j4IcI/AAAAAAAAeik/aUjIwy3_sRMhgeTJ40hXGGgc1VbJAm53QCEw/s320/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BFinished%2BMini%2B2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The last things I touched were to add a better color to the feathers hanging from his weapon hand, <a href="https://goo.gl/YKKpO5" target="_blank">Reaper Pale Saffron</a>, and to create a tattoo, <a href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Panzer Aces Stencil</a>, on his chest and belly. They are a protection spell. The belly tattoo is partially obscured by the rings hanging from the chest strap. <br />
<br />
I am finished with the miniature itself, I will add some moss and a slate stone in front of the miniature's base. Perhaps some foliage around the stone in addition to the moss.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for the Show Off post. Want to see what came before this segment, review the <a href="https://goo.gl/e5N3l5" target="_blank">WIP :: Ogre Mage :: Reaper Miniatures P-65 Heavy Metal</a>.<br />

<br />
The P-65 Heavy Metal was a remake of Reaper's original mixture of lead and tin alloy. This one is 60% lead and 40% tin alloy. The government banned the use of lead in products and then revised that law to allow adult hobbies to sell it. Reaper later discontinued the line with the creation of their new medium, Bones plastic.<br />
<br />
You can check out the <a href="https://goo.gl/al4wU5" target="_blank">white metal version of this ogre mage</a> if interested or hope they add him to their fourth Bones Kickstarter next year. <a href="https://goo.gl/EE4HBE" target="_blank">Watch their Kickstarter account.</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r5OXnyjjn0A/WBuNwk3D0vI/AAAAAAAAefk/jRpaEnZ1sjczJnyo3fW2_DaOlL_bC5XWwCLcB/s1600/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BBasecoated.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r5OXnyjjn0A/WBuNwk3D0vI/AAAAAAAAefk/jRpaEnZ1sjczJnyo3fW2_DaOlL_bC5XWwCLcB/s400/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BBasecoated.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Yeah, the background was boring so I added a border.<br />
<br />
As you can see here, he's just basecoated and attached to a piece of slate which has been covered with ballast.<br />
<br />
I basecoated this guy a long time ago and shelved him because ... well, I wasn't ready to completely get into finishing him.<br />
<br />
I decided the other night to pull him from the shelf of shame and resume
work on him. I hooked him up to my holder ... then had to counter his
weight with rocks, sand AND water ... he's a heavy bugger.<br />
<br />
I used craft paints at the time to basecoat him. I am okay with the basecoating and enjoy the palette I started.<br />
<br />
So, colors ...<br />
<ul>
<li>The green hakama pants and robe are Celery.</li>
<li>His skin is Phthalo Blue.</li>
<li>The Pack Cover is Lavendar.</li>
<li>The Fur Jacket is Antique Gold.</li>
<li>The orange-like highlights are Deep Sea Coral(?) ... I think. Been a while.</li>
<li>The ground is Sunflower Yellow.</li>
</ul>
The gist of the color scheme was desaturated tones to start with.<br />
<br />
I've gotten a lot of suggestions to paint a tattoo on his tremendous belly. Which I have been considering. I am also interested in doing a face paint of some kind as well.<br />
<br />
Got into some shading and alteration of the colors following night.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WBCpZnbTiXs/WBuOpl8ld_I/AAAAAAAAefs/PaY8gyJxLro0KGU9i6G8T5KkGWlm8GzuwCLcB/s1600/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BShaded.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WBCpZnbTiXs/WBuOpl8ld_I/AAAAAAAAefs/PaY8gyJxLro0KGU9i6G8T5KkGWlm8GzuwCLcB/s640/Ogre%2BMage%2B-%2BShaded.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Sticking with the border ... WTH.<br />
<br />
Anyway, used <a href="https://goo.gl/2DIX4u" target="_blank">Reaper Midnight Blue</a> to shade his skin. <a href="https://goo.gl/X5ggXE" target="_blank">Reaper Leaf Green</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/BFmJIZ" target="_blank">Reaper Jungle Camo</a> to shade his hakana. Reaper Rattlesnake
Leather (promo color) to shade his fir jacket, the basket and some of his
accessories. I also used Rattlesnake Leather on the grip of his
weapon.<br />
<br />
I used <a href="https://goo.gl/pYQr8U" target="_blank">Reaper Imperial Purple</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/qnTDCR" target="_blank">Reaper Gem Purple</a> on the basket
cover. <a href="https://goo.gl/csiVh7" target="_blank">Reaper Terran Khaki</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/mIHo3L" target="_blank">Reaper Autumn Shadow</a> to make the basket
three colors of wicker. <a href="https://goo.gl/csiVh7" target="_blank">Reaper Terran Khaki</a> to basecoat the hanging
head.<br />
<br />
Then on the Water Goblin on his back, I used <a href="https://goo.gl/btJ2rv" target="_blank">Reaper Carrottop Red</a> to
shade and then <a href="https://goo.gl/nmjxyD" target="_blank">Reaper Lava Orange</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/YKKpO5" target="_blank">Reaper Pale Saffron</a> to highlight
the Water Goblin's shell. Reaper Rattlesnake Leather to shade the Water
Goblin's face.<br />
<br />
We'll see if I can get to more of him before the weekend.<br />

<br />
<a href="https://goo.gl/TgrDQK" target="_blank">To continue the work on Harrow</a>, I started off by lining the scarecrow with <a href="https://goo.gl/yVOJor" target="_blank">Reaper Grey Liner</a>. I basecoated the tree with Reaper Rattlesnake Leather (promo color) and then edged the bark with <a href="https://goo.gl/mqjPkW" target="_blank">Reaper Palomino Gold</a>.<br />
<br />
His hat is <a href="https://goo.gl/csiVh7" target="_blank">Reaper Terran Khaki</a>. His face is <a href="https://goo.gl/FHW62T" target="_blank">Vallejo Yellow Green</a> and his eyes are <a href="https://goo.gl/mqjPkW" target="_blank">Reaper Palomino Gold</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vEuhyjFf1v8/WBdzUeMNE8I/AAAAAAAAeac/4a8_PyAC42MnhF0WxkUfn4enmn1PuA7nACEw/s1600/Gauntfield%2B-%2BLined.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vEuhyjFf1v8/WBdzUeMNE8I/AAAAAAAAeac/4a8_PyAC42MnhF0WxkUfn4enmn1PuA7nACEw/s400/Gauntfield%2B-%2BLined.jpg" width="340" /></a></div>
<br />
I was unsure what colors I would make the rest of his clothing so I left him for another night to consider it and possibly get started on his bones, etc. However, the next day, I decided on the following:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AryXBkHD9Vk/WBdzUKqab9I/AAAAAAAAeaY/cSjq9wCgcukYD-P660c-qnpNxtUg0-_TACEw/s1600/Gauntfield%2B-%2BClothing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AryXBkHD9Vk/WBdzUKqab9I/AAAAAAAAeaY/cSjq9wCgcukYD-P660c-qnpNxtUg0-_TACEw/s640/Gauntfield%2B-%2BClothing.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Coat:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="https://goo.gl/mIHo3L" target="_blank">Reaper Auburn Shadow</a></li>
<li><a href="https://goo.gl/nkgVpZ" target="_blank">Reaper Rach Red</a> (highlights)</li>
</ul>
<br />
Pants:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="https://goo.gl/eujnN7" target="_blank">Reaper Adonese Green</a></li>
</ul>
Amusingly, the two reds are considerable different ends of the saturation spectrum. Once I got the Rach Red on as the highlight, I decided to push it brighter to give the coat an almost glowing effect. The interior of his jacket got a wash of <a href="https://goo.gl/5oDAQG" target="_blank">Reaper Umber Brown</a> to darken it up some and bring it closer to brown.<br />
<br />
From there, I painted the rest of him using <a href="https://goo.gl/t6yd1Q" target="_blank">Privateer Press Cryx Bane Base</a> for the bag basecoat and covering it with Reaper Rattlesnake Leather (promo color). The bones inside the bag are basecoated with the same bone color I always use <a href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Panzer Aces Stencil</a> and then Reaper Rattlesnake Leather over that to age them. <br />
<br />
The staff of the scythe is the same Rattlesnake Leather over the <a href="https://goo.gl/fojWUy" target="_blank">Reaper Grey Primer</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/yVOJor" target="_blank">Reaper Grey Liner</a> and then washed with some <a href="https://goo.gl/5oDAQG" target="_blank">Reaper Umber Brown</a> to give the wood a nice variation of colors.<br />
<br />
The blade of the scythe is <a href="https://goo.gl/D0vjOi" target="_blank">Reaper Tarnished Steel</a> which might get some tarnish/rust added to it later. The spike of the scythe is <a href="https://goo.gl/2JAKi0" target="_blank">Reaper Old Bronze</a>.<br />
<br />
Gauntfield's boots are the <a href="https://goo.gl/csiVh7" target="_blank">Reaper Terran Khaki</a> with a wash of the <a href="https://goo.gl/5oDAQG" target="_blank">Reaper Umber Brown</a> .<br />
<br />
His hair is an interesting combination of Reaper Cactus Flower (promo color) as a basecoat, darkened with Rattlesnake Leather wash and then some <a href="https://goo.gl/nkgVpZ" target="_blank">Reaper Rach Red</a> for highlights.<br />
<br />
The eyes got a dot of <a href="https://goo.gl/7DT8d6" target="_blank">Vallejo Flat Yellow</a> to brighten them further and his bones are the <a href="https://goo.gl/u2X2rn" target="_blank">Vallejo Panzer Aces Stencil</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rGWgOEUhSHc/WBdzUjTWIzI/AAAAAAAAeag/jyO_lnjEz-g1-c-yP8bAriKMAUWhkBFcQCEw/s1600/Gauntfield%2B-%2BPainted.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="348" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rGWgOEUhSHc/WBdzUjTWIzI/AAAAAAAAeag/jyO_lnjEz-g1-c-yP8bAriKMAUWhkBFcQCEw/s640/Gauntfield%2B-%2BPainted.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To carry the saturation style from Gauntfield to the rest of the piece, I added Vallejo Flat Yellow around the tree to push the eerie ~ creepy factor.<br />
<br />
The last steps will be to add some more color to the ground and then spread and pile desaturated autumn leaves around the tree and his feet and scythe.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: 24px;"><span style="font-size: small;">from Markshire :: Kingdom of Ice</span></span></div>
<br />
A long time ago, I made a campaign world for D&D called Markshire. I've prolly mentioned it before on here. It touches a lot of what I do creatively. In 2005, my friends and I created this campaign world in the game, Neverwinter Nights, as a persistent world and ran adventures from it for some time.<br />
<br />
Within that world there exist, in addition to the gods of our mythology, the personification of emotions from the realm, known as Reidlar. Some are forces for order and some are forces for chaos. Harrow was the personification of terror; specifically, that of the unknown or unreasonable. In Markshire, the terrors of living in a city under near constant winter was deafening and a being crept from the darkest corners of the collective terror.<br />
<br />
Reidlar were avatars of the dungeon masters for the game. They were NPCs that weren't gods, per se, but powerful beings that could be used as tools to spur adventures. Each DM was tasked with creating this persona for the campaign, so they could add their own twist to the story. Amusingly, this wasn't mine. Mine is my screen name.<br />
<br />
Harrow is a scarecrow. A truly terrifying version. <a href="https://goo.gl/K1ARlB" target="_blank">Reaper Miniatures' Gauntfield</a> ... a perfect name, that I wish our DM had thought of ... was a perfect personification of the character. I bought him a while ago with the idea of placing him behind a tree.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Where I got to before writing this. See the steps leading to this below.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Over time, the tree was built up using excess Green Stuff as I worked on other miniatures and dioramas. The tree trunk I built would be gnarled and
dead for many years. So I started out by applying him to a metal slug for a base and filled the space up to his feet on the slot bottom he had and built the
basis for his tree.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YQ7okaPnUww/WA49Kxux8dI/AAAAAAAAd-0/DiCawN7C2RQTUgiqof1d4BiPJNr2W7zBgCLcB/s1600/Guantfield%2B-%2BInitial%2BPrep.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YQ7okaPnUww/WA49Kxux8dI/AAAAAAAAd-0/DiCawN7C2RQTUgiqof1d4BiPJNr2W7zBgCLcB/s400/Guantfield%2B-%2BInitial%2BPrep.jpg" width="310" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rocks, ballast, sand and two bamboo skewers</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
As you can see, I used two skewer pieces as the center posts and set the "fork" of the tree I was looking for. Then I placed terrarium rocks around it to fill out the bottom of the trunk.<br />
<br />
Over the years I scraped on any excess <a href="https://goo.gl/JAkx9F" target="_blank">Kneadite Green Stuff</a> I had from various other projects.<br />
<br />
The last bit added was from the effort <a href="https://goo.gl/37kTm2" target="_blank">to add the eye of my Stonehaven Undead Dwarf</a>. A very tiny amount
of Green Stuff. Which is a little hard to mix and create at that size.
It was smaller than a pin head. So the remainder went around one of
the upright trunks from the tree.<br />
<br />
Then after some thought on my efforts to create a bark exterior I
decided the whole tree needed some skimming and a little filling of some of the unnatural crevices of Green Stuff. So I got out my <a href="https://goo.gl/2L8yxZ" target="_blank">Squadron Green Putty</a> and went to town
on the surface of the tree. I had primed the scarecrow and tree earlier
so I just went right over that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JSesad--hFk/WA49_EQSTcI/AAAAAAAAd-4/p7EMU7NDiAc2Cs-TqOi18W4sjJWeDKWqwCLcB/s1600/Gauntfield%2B-%2BFinal%2BPrep.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JSesad--hFk/WA49_EQSTcI/AAAAAAAAd-4/p7EMU7NDiAc2Cs-TqOi18W4sjJWeDKWqwCLcB/s640/Gauntfield%2B-%2BFinal%2BPrep.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You'll notice that the bark added is a bit rough. Once it was dried and set, I could clean it up a bit more. I liked the appearance of it but I went back in and added some more.<br />
<br />
Green Putty is also a great product to smooth over a surface. So I
made some of the sand around the scarecrow smooth with the putty while I
was working the tree.<br />
<br />
Green Putty dries really quick so within a few minutes I sanded the
surface of it with my thumb and a stiff brush. I have an old toothbrush
for this.<br />
<br />
So, here's a second skim of "bark" with the Green Putty. I cut off
the excess bamboo skewers and created a branch collar on each end where
the trunks would get overgrown with the bark.<br />
<br />
Just below the saddle of the two trunks, I added a third trunk that
has broken off and left a branch collar using the Green Putty.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WiFXsCfUJi0/WA4-44dmomI/AAAAAAAAd-8/gDtHbRlErRQr1vt0wi8ikxO5eVyheRuGgCLcB/s1600/Guantfield%2B-%2BSecond%2BSkim%2Bplus%2BKnot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WiFXsCfUJi0/WA4-44dmomI/AAAAAAAAd-8/gDtHbRlErRQr1vt0wi8ikxO5eVyheRuGgCLcB/s400/Guantfield%2B-%2BSecond%2BSkim%2Bplus%2BKnot.jpg" width="355" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">More Green Putty added and a Branch Collar added</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
After the Green Putty dried out, I quickly basecoated it with <a href="https://goo.gl/Mxq3wd" target="_blank">Reaper Walnut Brown</a>. The primer on the scarecrow, himself, is <a href="https://goo.gl/fojWUy" target="_blank">Reaper Grey Primer</a>.<br />
<br />
I think I will be adding leaves at the end to the ground. Piled
around his feet which are somewhat buried in the sand and along the tree
base. Autumn, leaves of course.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wnj0UBV8DS0/WA4888LagAI/AAAAAAAAd_A/eA6ZXC_ZBUsJ_MtUXCbaRnr-H-9RpeuRwCEw/s1600/Gauntfield%2B-%2BTree%2BBasecoated.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="376" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wnj0UBV8DS0/WA4888LagAI/AAAAAAAAd_A/eA6ZXC_ZBUsJ_MtUXCbaRnr-H-9RpeuRwCEw/s640/Gauntfield%2B-%2BTree%2BBasecoated.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In the game, you could try various doors around the city of Stonemark
... yes, a whole city. If they were locked, there was a small chance
you'd be captured by Harrow and sent to his courtyard. Within the
courtyard would spawn ten of his scarecrows ... past victims. Once you
defeated the ten scarecrows, a stronger and far more terrifying version
of a scarecrow would appear. A personification of Harrow himself. If
you defeated him, you could leave. Naturally, there were resources here
for the adventurers to find and use so some sought out the master of
terror on purpose.<br />
<br />
So, I'll be adding some pumpkins to the base.<br />
<br />
Below is simple story about the character and the premise of him within the game. Stay tuned for the implementation.<br />
<br />
Suggestions, comments and critiques are welcome as always.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>A Bogeyman Story</b></span><br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>“Go to sleep, Anna,” said the elderly woman heading toward the
door to the cubicle that served as Anna’s room. “You’ll need your rest
for tomorrow. We’re off to Stonemark to sell some livestock.”</i><br />
<br />
<i>“But,
Nana, I’m not tired,” whined Anna. Of course, her grandmother instantly
forgave her for her whining. All 6-year-old girls whine.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“You’ll
do as you’re told or in Harrow’s clutches you’ll be.” This amused her
grandmother in some strange way but Anna couldn’t fathom why.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“Nana, what’s a hare-row?” excitement entered her voice not fear. This caused some concern to appear on the old woman’s face.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“Anna,
dear, you must be careful how you say his name. Saying it like that may
bring him all the quicker.” Her grandmother stepped back into the
cubicle and settled herself on the floor next to her palette.</i><br />
<br />
<i>This excited Anna as this was grandmother’s storytelling posture.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“Oh
dear, I cannot believe my daughter would be so neglectful.” A bit of
outrage crept into her voice. “Anna, we live in a strange, and oft
times, very scary land. But nothing in Markshire is nearly so strange
nor terrifying than…” her voice drops to whisper level “…Harrow.”</i><br />
<br />
<i>Grandmother
knew her storytelling skills quite well. She dropped her voice a bit to
allow it a darker quality. The darkness of the room deepened as she
started her tale.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“A long time ago lived a man alone in a
castle. His castle was empty of all save him. No one knows exactly what
he did to frighten them all off but no one ever returned. He sits upon a
throne of sticks covered with small animal skulls and bird feathers.
From there he can hear every whisper of his name.”</i><br />
<br />
<i>“One
day, a whisper reached him and then another and he learned that people
doubted him. People were no longer afraid of him. This upset him
greatly.” The woman’s voice rose in power as she said this. There was no
doubt she was in full story mode.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“So he began to
search out these whispers, these doubts. With no easy access to the
world around him, Harrow used magic to create a portal. It was a portal
that opened in the shadows of any door. Then he waited. Waiting until
the next doubt came.” The old woman dropped her voice down an octave and
the room deepened still further into darkness.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“He
heard the whisper finally and he used his portal to visit this person.
It was a girl. No older then you, my dear. She was telling her mother
that she didn’t believe in him anymore that her mother was telling her
this to scare her into sleeping. The mother, of course, told her that he
was real and that she had best behave. Content that she had set her
daughter straight, the mother left the room, and went back to her
embroidery.” Her grandmother made sewing motions with her hands that
amused Anna.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“Meanwhile, in the near darkness of her
room the little girl sat and waited. Still she doubted her mother. A
nearly silent sound caught her attention. She looked up then and an
obvious chill ran down her back.” She shivered as she said this to
emphasize the little girl’s terror.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“The little girl
watched in horror as two gaunt, nearly skeletal hands reached towards
her. Behind the hands was a pair of baleful eyes. The eyes were opened
to their fullest extent and glowing from the darkness. Just as the hands
touched the little girl a flash of bitter darkness enveloped her, and
when the little girl could see again, her bed was gone. Her room was
missing. She was sitting in a pumpkin patch in the middle of a castle
courtyard.” A small bright orange gourd appeared in the old woman’s
hand.</i><br />
<br />

<i>“Pumpkins were spread as far as she could see.
Among them were trees. The pumpkins rested in the trees, nestled against
the main trunk or speared through from the top. Some were even carved
open and light shone through from the faces of the pumpkins.” Then
grandmother’s voice dropped to a whisper.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“The little
girl stood up and walked to the closest patch. As she neared it the
topmost pumpkin moved. Then it rose. Attached to the pumpkin was a neck
of wood. Dangling below the pumpkin’s head hung some old, slightly small
clothing. Feathers stuck out from the collar of the shirt. It stood up
completely and towered over the little girl.” A bit of panic crept into
the old woman’s voice. Anna’s eyes were wide with fear now.</i><br />
<br />
<i>“It
stood there a moment and then out of the corner of her eye, the girl
noticed other scarecrows moving towards her at a slow pace.” Grandmother
grew silent for a few moments.</i><br />
<br />
<i>Then, “No one ever saw the little girl again.”</i><br />
<br />
<i>The
grandmother straightened her posture and put on a smile for Anna. “The
tale continues that those that Harrow visits are safe if they are
sleeping. He cannot harm you at all if you are truly sleeping.”</i><br />
<br />
<i>“So go to sleep, little one.”</i><br />
<br />
<i>The
elderly woman paused in the darkened hallway just outside the little
girl’s room. She put her back to the door and fell right through it.
Fear swept over her like the darkness that enveloped her. When the
darkness receded she could barely make out her surroundings. Slowly, as
if from a distance, came a sound like clapping. The shadows nearby
retreated and a scarecrow stepped forward, it’s hands coming together
over and over. Then came the whispered and harsh words, “Well done,
granny. Couldn’t have told the story better myself.”</i></blockquote>
